Who said bowling was for 'The Old.' Someone should have told the 'Scotland under 25's team' that visited Collingwood during 2017. A great social day, with friendly competition from a talented team of young bowlers.

Collingwood Bowling Club - Bowling Since 1902

Bowling has come a long way since 1588 when Sir Francis Drake was informed of the approaching Spanish Armada whilst playing bowls on Plymouth Hoe.  It is said, on being warned of the approach of the Spanish fleet, Drake remarked that there was plenty of time to finish the game and still beat the Spaniards.  Whether fact or fiction, who knows?

One thing is certain, when taking up the game of bowls it can be a totally absorbing sport as many of our new members will testify to. The club has attracted many new members since taking over the redundant Heaton Terrace bowling park in 2014/15, consisting of many people who are bowling for the very first time.

Collingwood Bowling Club’s mission, and indeed its ethos, is to bring the community into bowling whilst providing a social, supportive and friendly environment for all.

As a registered charity we could not exist without the generous financial support given by our many sponsors and also the many local and national charities whose support has enabled our club to ‘bring Heaton Terrace bowling park back to life.’

North Tyneside VODA has been a vital mentor and advisor throughout the whole process of refurbishing and improving the bowling park. Our Business Manager (Alan Hall) says: “We are extremely grateful to VODA for all of the advice and support we have received over these past years. Without their help we would not have seen all the wonderful improvements made to the pavilion and park. It has been a tremendous achievement that is a credit to VODA and all those people involved in the whole process.”

We host an annual friendly match versus VODA as our way of  giving a thank you for their guidance. We have also hosted an afternoon for 71 pupils from Norham High School – not many Old Folks amongst them – many of whom looked like future bowlers. Our aim is to fully develop this contact for the future for them to sample our great sport. We will in due course also look to engage with other local schools. These are only two of the many friendly events held at the club and many more are planned for the coming out-door seasons.

Collingwood is also a club filled with many top class seasoned bowlers (many at County level), and the club is always keen to take on other bowling clubs within the various leagues we compete in throughout the season. Our internal club competitions are also well contested by our members at all levels and the seasoned players have to keep looking over their shoulders for the up and coming novices and new members looking to improve their game.

Our chairman Michael Wilson is both ‘Mr. Collingwood’ and ‘Mr. Bowls’. Michael is one of the longest playing, best known and well respected bowlers in the North East region; his enthusiasm for the game is still undiminished - spend 10 minutes with Michael talking about bowls and we will have a new member.

So, if you wish to get involved in a skillful, exciting sport – yes bowls is that – come along to one of our coaching sessions on a Saturday morning from 10.00am – 12.00pm and give it a go - we can supply the equipment and coaching. All you need is to bring along some flat soled shoes (or trainers) to wear whilst playing. Tea, coffee and biscuits are available at a half time break where you can also have a very social chat with all members present.
