Why our members join.

Michael – A Lasting Legacy

Michael was our longest-serving member, dedicating over 40 years to the club. Following in the footsteps of his father and uncle, he played a vital role in shaping what Collingwood is today, serving as Chairman, Trustee, and contributing at county level with Bowls Northumberland.

He was, in many ways, the standard many bowlers aspire to.

Michael once reflected:

“Since moving to Heaton Terrace, the club has completely transformed. We’ve become a welcoming, social space for everyone — including lady members who’ve had a huge positive influence. Newcomers can come along to our free taster sessions and feel completely at ease. It’s a place to meet friendly people, stay active, and enjoy the game.”

Millie – From New Member to Key Part of the Club

Millie joined in 2015 as our very first lady member — and quickly became an essential part of the club. As a Trustee, she plays a key role in keeping everything running smoothly (and is always popular when she brings along her famous bacon sandwiches!).

She says:

“After losing my husband, I wanted something to help me meet people and stay active. The club has been wonderful — I’ve made great friends and always enjoy the company.”

Matty – A Fresh Start

Matty joined the club in 2015 and has since become a well-loved member, serving as a Trustee and on the selection committee — as well as winning a club trophy.

His story shows the real impact the club can have:

“I had health problems and wasn’t socialising at all. After seeing a flyer, I decided to give bowls a try. It completely turned my life around. I’m fitter, healthier, and surrounded by friends — it’s been a brand new beginning.”

David – Finding Comfort and Community

David joined in 2017 after years as a full-time carer. Living with sight impairment, he was looking for a way to reconnect with others.

He says:

“After losing my mother, I needed something to get me out again. Joining the club helped me relax and meet wonderful people. It’s been a real comfort, and I thoroughly enjoy being part of the club.”

Maureen – Confidence and Friendship

Maureen joined in 2015 — her first ever sports club — and quickly found a place she could call her own.

“It’s given me confidence to meet new people. The club is so friendly and there’s always something going on. Even with my back problems, I find bowls really helps — and I love the coffee mornings that keep us connected through winter.”

Kate – A Champion Spirit

Kate joined when the club first opened its doors to ladies and went on to become our first Ladies Champion — winning the title in both 2016 and 2017.

“After years of badminton, I wanted something less demanding. From day one, everyone was so welcoming and encouraging. The club has become a huge part of my life and a real asset to the community.”

David – From Curious Visitor to Committed Member

David first visited during a Saturday taster session — unsure if bowls was really for him.

“I always thought bowls wasn’t for me. But after giving it a try, I was surprised how much I enjoyed it. What really stood out was the people — full of character, friendly, and welcoming. Now I can truly call many members friends. It’s been a fantastic experience, and I look forward to many more.”
